About Dave Gillan

I joined the Prison Service in 1999.  I started at HMP Elmley as an Officer and enjoyed my work greatly as well as getting to work with some brilliant colleagues.  I was promoted in 2014 to the newly introduced Supervising Officer, CM in 2017 and Band 7 Governor in 2021.  I began union work in 2012 by joining my local POA Committee.  The committee was in a transitional period and found myself Branch Chair by December of that year. It was a very steep learning curve, especially during the dark times of the Benchmarking and New Ways of Working fiasco.  I stepped down as Branch Chair in 2018 as times were not so rough and I figured I needed a deserved break.

I watched on at the national picture and the abject failure of the historic union to deliver either better working conditions for staff or a much-needed pay rise.  As time went on, I realised that I missed helping my colleagues out and was itching to get back into trade unionism.  In April 2020 I was presented with an amazing opportunity.

I am very proud of the achievements of the CJWU and its ongoing success.  A union shaped by like-minded individuals who put our members first.  Together we can.

Join us and be a part of a union that truly represents you.
